iPhone Dev Team: Pwnage Tool for Mac OS X Now, the Rest to Follow Shortly

UPDATE: Ultrasn0w is now available for download (details here). For those of you interested to jailbreak the iPhone, the iPhone Dev Team has released the iPhone 3.0-jailbreaking Pwnage Tool for Mac OS X. While the tool has been released in a timely manner (just two days after the iPhone OS 3.0 was rolled out), it seems that the Dev Team did not have the time to address a few issues – like the fact that it does not work with the 2G iPod Touch or the iPhone 3G S.

There are other things to take into consideration if you want to use Pwnage Tool for Mac OS X. “If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (Cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release,” explained the Dev Team.

The thing is that in its current form, yellowsn0w does not work with the 3.0 update’s baseband, only ultrasn0w works with it and it is now out just yet (will be soon). Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models, and will be released via APT – but it will not work with the recently released iPhone 3G S.

Now that Pwnage Tool for Mac OS X is out there, the Dev Team is working hard to roll out QuickPwn for Windows and Mac OS X. An exact release date has not been provided, and the Dev Team does not want to be bugged about it; it has reassured iPhone users out there that the Dev team is “working flat out to get everything finished” and that QuickPwn will “follow sometime soon.”

On a little sidenote, it seems that the Dev Team has hidden a little Easter egg in the Pwnage Tool: if you set your partition size to a “demonic value” you will have access to a hidden ringtone.

The iPhone OS 3.0 was launched by Apple on the 17th oh June, bringing a long list of new features to the numerous iPhone and iPod Touch owners out there. Here is a recap of what the iPhone OS 3.0 has to offer, just in case you are not familiar with the operating system’s capabilities:

- The option to cut, copy and paste
- Landscape mode for email, messages and notes
- MMS and tethering capability (not supported by AT&T for the time being)
- Enhanced Spotlight search that encompasses searching through your apps as well as your phone’s data
- Faster JavaScript
- P2P and 3rd party accessories support
- Push Notification.
- Downloadable movies and TV shows
- CalDAV support
- Voice memos
- YouTube login
- Find my iPhone for MobileMe users
- Shake the iPhone/iPod Touch and a new track will star playing (useful for when you get tired with a track)
- InApp purchases
- Parental Controls
- Stereo Bluetooth
- Automatic WiFi login
- Encrypt iPhone backups in iTunes.
- Turn-by-turn directions.
- Forward meetings invites and contacts
- HTTP streaming audio and video
- Enhanced language support
- Form AutoFill in Safari
- 46 security fixes.

There is a reason why I’ve recapped the new features in the iPhone OS 3.0 - with such a long list of goodies, perhaps you will not need to jailbreak the device.
