Come February, AT&T will no longer be the only carrier in the US to offer Apple’s iPhone 4. Come February, the 10th of February to be more precise, the smartphone will be offered by Verizon Wireless as well. Starting with the 3rd of February exclusive opportunity to pre-order iPhone 4 online will be offered to qualified Verizon Wireless customers.

“Verizon Wireless customers have told us they can't wait to get their hands on iPhone 4, and we think they are going to love it,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer. “We have enormous respect for the company Verizon has built and the loyalty they have earned from their customers.”

The Verizon iPhone 4 will offer some extra functionality compared to the AT&T iPhone 4, functionality that users have been asking for but AT&T has been reluctant to offer. I am of course talking about WiFi hotspot capabilities. iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless, thanks to new Personal Hotspot capabilities, will allow users to connect up to 5 WiFi enabled devices to the iPhone 4.

Or to put it in other words, the iPhone 4 will be able to act as a hotspot for up to five gadgets.

“We are pleased to introduce millions of wireless users to the industry leading iPhone 4 on the nation’s most reliable network,” said Lowell McAdam, president and chief operating officer of Verizon. “This is an important step for the industry as two great companies join forces to give wireless customers one of the most important technological additions to the mobile landscape this century.”

In related news, Apple has recently rolled out Mac OS X 10.6.6, an update that comes with one security fix and the Mac App Store. Similar to the App Store for the iPhone, the Mac App Store allows the Mac user to browse through all sorts of apps. Currently there are more than 1,000 apps in the Mac App Store.

The Mac App Store was released to the public as part of the Mac OS X 10.6.6 update – that was on the 6th of January. On the 7th of January Apple announced that more than 1 million downloads had already been recorded.
