Good news for those of you that own and want to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS: longtime Apple hacker George Hotz has released a jailbreak tool called purplera1n that you can use to set you device free from the limitations Apple has imposed on it. In case you are not familiar with George Hotz, here is all you need to know about him: he is the one that hacked into Apple’s first iPhone back in 2007.

Here are the technical details that you need to know about the purplera1n jailbreak tool:
- For the time being it works only on Windows-powered machines, but a Mac OS X version will be rolled out soon. UPDATE: Mac OS X version has been released as well.
- You need to have the latest iTunes version installed on your machine.
- You must have an iPhone 3G S with the 3.0 firmware.
- You can download purplera1n here.


If you meet all these requirements, then you can jailbreak your iPhone 3G S. All you have to do is connect your iPhone as you normally do -> click “make it ra1n” -> wait a bit -> when the device boots up, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Make sure to backup before you go ahead with the jailbreak! Purplera1n is still in Beta, so it pays to play it safe and not brick your iPhone 3G S.

The iPhone Dev Team has already announced that it will release a jailbreak tool for the iPhone 3G S, but not right now. According to the Dev Team, releasing a jailbreak at this point in time would not be beneficial for the masses (details here); well, George Hotz does not agree with this approach.

“Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it's just a matter of tools,” said George Hotz.

The iPhone Dev Team may not have rolled out a jailbreak tool just yet, but they did roll out something else: a video showcasing the ultrasn0w software unlock on an iPhone 3G S (view here).
