Direct Messages are no longer limited to 140 characters. Twitter announced that it is dropping the 140-characer limit and allowing a total of 10,000 characters for Direct Messages. This should be more than enough to say it all.

Tweets remain limited to 140 characters though. Twitter dropped the 140-character limit for Direct Messages only.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed egestas auctor justo id molestie. Phasellus vel mi urna. Donec dictum, turpise.

The lorem ipsum paragraph above is precisely 140 characters – and 140 characters is exactly the limit that Twitter imposes for Direct Messages. As you can see, 140 characters is not much. Certainly not enough if you have lots to say.

Since Twitter is used by millions of people around the world to talk about all sorts of topics, the company wants its customers to be able to communicate with ease. And that is why Twitter decided to drop the 140-character limitation for Direct Messages.

“Direct Messages let you have private conversations about the memes, news, movements, and events that unfold on Twitter. Each of the hundreds of millions of Tweets sent across Twitter every day is an opportunity for you to spark a conversation about what’s happening in your world. That’s why we’ve made a number of changes to Direct Messages over the last few months. Today’s change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun,” explained Sachin Agarwal, Program Manager for Direct Messages at Twitter.

You can now compose Direct Messages that are as large as 10,000 characters. That’s 10 times the paragraph listed below. I think it’s safe to say that it will be enough space for you to say everything that you want to say.

Nam quis porta purus. Aliquam a tincidunt massa. Vestibulum in eleifend metus. Maecenas id aliquet felis, at semper lorem. In id elit.

Please note that:
  • The Direct Messages change presented in this article is being gradually rolled out across Twitter’s Android and iOS apps, on Twitter.com, TweetDeck, and Twitter for Mac. It will roll out worldwide over the next few weeks.
  • Tweets continue to be limited to 140 characters.
