Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop 1.0

Yahoo!, the company that purchased the open source email provider Zimbra back in September 2007, has announced the release of Zimbra Desktop 1.0 – a free piece of software that will work with your Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X or Linux-based operating system. The release comes after more than a year while Zimbra Desktop carried the Beta badge.

Since Zimbra Desktop is a newcomer to the email client worlds, it needs to stand out of the crowd. As such it is capable of being a central hub for all your existing email accounts. The Zimbra Desktop team explains: “Zimbra Mail. Yahoo! Mail. Gmail. AOL. They all work automatically in Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop; even Outlook or any other work or personal email account using POP or IMAP is easy to set up. The best part—you can read them offline without an internet connection when you are in "airplane" mode.”

Now if that doesn’t float your boat, here are some key features you can expect to get with Zimbra Desktop 1.0:
- Unlimited email storage space.
- Get all your email accounts in one place. Zimbra Desktop also comes with “full email, contact, calendar, document management and offline access features for free”
-Support for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
- Offline support.
- Support for 20 languages.

While Zimbra Desktop is a valid replacement for Thunderbird for example, the question the Zimbra team asks you is not about Mozilla’s software, but related to Microsoft’s Outlook client: “Looking to Replace Outlook? Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop combines the best aspects of existing email clients (also known as POP or IMAP email clients) with modern webmail applications to make a totally new and improved experience.”

If you would like to get Zimbra Desktop 1.0, a download location is available here.
