While Apple was busy rolling out iOS 8, Yahoo! rolled out an update for Yahoo! Weather, the weather app that’s so good looking it won an Apple Design Award at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) 2013. The updated version, Yahoo! Weather 1.6.0 for iOS, uses technology that’s typically found in video games to generate weather effect animations for snow, rain, fog, and intense heat.

“With our latest iOS update, we’re taking our award-winning experience on the Yahoo Weather App even further. By using technology typically only experienced in video games, we’re bringing weather to life on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch through animations that appear directly in the Yahoo Weather Today widget as well as in your app. It’s the same beautiful design and location-based weather photos from Flickr, now combined with amazing weather effects,” said Shenglong Gao, Associate Product Manager, Mobile Weather.

There are tons and tons of weather apps out there. What makes Yahoo!’s weather app stand out is the beautiful design. You see, Yahoo! Weather very nicely combines useful information about the weather with stunning photos from Flickr – amazing photos for every weather condition from every city around the world. The app is so well made that recognized it at WWDC 2013 and gave it an Apple Design Award.

The news is that Yahoo! updated its weather app this Wednesday, September 17 (the day when Apple rolled out iOS 8 to the public). The updated app, Yahoo! Weather 1.6.0 adds one more element to the equation: animations. You get useful info about the weather, stunning photos from Flickr, and weather effect animations for snow, rain, fog, and intense heat. If it’s a hot day in New York, you will see the haze on your iPhone’s screen.

Shenglong Gao again: “These animated effects will make checking the forecast daily more delightful than ever. So take the opportunity to explore the weather in your favorite places around the world, and see for yourself. Update your app or download the latest version in the App Store today.”

Please note that the Yahoo! Weather app is also available for Android on Google Play.
