Here are a couple of news that I thought go well together. The first one is that you no longer need a Yahoo! account to sign in on any of Yahoo!’s web properties. Earlier this week the company announced that on the 20th (that’s today) it “will be opening our network to third-party ID sign-in options with Facebook and Google.” This means you can use your Facebook or Google Id to sign in to Yahoo!.

“As a place that over 600 million people visit every month, Yahoo! strives every day to bring you the content, information, tools and meaningful social connections relevant to you from across the Web. It’s our belief that by continuing to open up the Yahoo! network to third-party IDs, we can help more folks join in the fun and create exciting, more personalized and inclusive online experiences. So sign-in and enjoy the new fast pass to your personal Web on Yahoo!,” said Yahoo!.

While Yahoo! is busy with that, incredibly popular social networking site Facebook is busy rolling out a Facebook app for feature phones – that’s the second news. Developed by Facebook and Snaptu (a free mobile application platform that runs on virtually every type of Internet-enabled mobile phones), the app works on more than 2,500 devices. The app comes with an easier-to-navigate home screen, contact synchronization, and fast scrolling of photos and friend updates.

Facebook discussed with various network operators from all over the world and got them not to charge their customers for using the app. For the first 90 days, users of the app will not pay any data charges.

The app is launching today on m.fb.snaptu.com/f in Sri Lanka (Dialog), Ukraine (Life), Poland (Play), Singapore (StarHub), Saudi Arabia (STC), Hong Kong (Three), Tunisia (Tunisia), Dominican Republic (Viva) and Romania (Vodafone).

It will launch soon in Canada (Mobilcity), India (Reliance). Mexico (Telcel), Brazil (TIM), and Bulgaria (Vivacom).

“During the next few months, we plan to make the app available through more carriers in other countries so you can have a great mobile Facebook experience no matter what device you use,” commented Program Manager with Facebook, Mark Heynen.
