Yahoo! Reveals the Most-Searched Topics of 2010

The other day we were reporting that Redmond-based software giant Microsoft put to together a top 10 search queries of 2010, making public the most-searched topics on Bing during 2010. In case you missed it, here’s the top 10 again:
  1. Kim Kardashian
  2. Sandra Bullock
  3. Tiger Woods
  4. Lady Gaga
  5. Barack Obama
  6. Hairstyles
  7. Kate Gosselin
  8. Walmart
  9. Justin Bieber
  10. Free
Today we switch focus on Yahoo!, because Yahoo! has also made public the most-searched topics on Yahoo! during 2010. Here’s Yahoo!’s Top 10 Searches of 2010:
  1. BP oil spill
  2. World Cup
  3. Miley Cyrus
  4. Kim Kardashian
  5. Lady Gaga
  6. iPhone
  7. Megan Fox
  8. Justin Bieber
  9. American Idol
  10. Britney Spears
Yahoo! did not stop there. It provided a few other interesting statistics related to search queries in 2010.

“While the search topics aren’t vastly different on mobile than PC (five out of 10 were the same, but in different order), we do know that what varies is the type of content consumers want. People use their phones to search for quick, bite-size information on the most popular news of the day. It’s about getting just enough information to keep us informed on the latest trends while we are out and about,” commented Irv Henderson, VP of Product Management with Yahoo! Mobile.

As Senior Editor and Web Trend Analyst with Yahoo!, Vera Chan explained, for the top 10 obsessions “we looked at both total search volume and the percentage change compared to 2009.”
