Yahoo may be in a bit of a slum, financially speaking, but this is not stopping them from putting out new software, like the brand new Yahoo Toolbar with FoxyTunes, or updating their existing mail client, Yahoo Mail, in order to make it work in a more efficient manner. This comes only a few days after our report on the Yahoo Messenger Holiday Audibles and Emoticarolers.

Starting with the Yahoo toolbar, let’s see what it can do for the regular internet user, besides the fact that it comes with the option to include the FoxyTunes add-on - which lets you control you music players directly from your browser, as well as find album covers, videos, and lyrics.

There are three main areas in which the new Yahoo Toolbar will come in handy:
- It makes for a safer browsing environment with its Spyware Protection feature.
- It makes for a more organized browsing environment thanks to the Bookmarks feature, Web Search instant suggestions, and personalized buttons.
- It maintains a constant connection with Yahoo Mail and consequently alerts you whenever a new message makes it to your inbox.

Moving on to Yahoo Mail (which has an estimated 275 million subscribers), Yahoo has initiated a limited beta test of a smarter mail client. The Yahoo Mail Team explains: “As you may have heard, we’ve been working on a new smarter inbox to help make your life easier. The smarter inbox experience features a new Yahoo! Mail Welcome Page which surfaces messages, information and activity updates you care about most, as well as an updated inbox and folder view that filters messages from your personal connections.”

The improvements do not stop there. In order to allow you to do much more directly from Yahoo Mail (and in an efficient manner), you also have access to 3rd party apps such as Flickr, Flixster and Xoopit. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so why not let images do the talking- check out a video presentation of the new Yahoo Mail inbox here.
