The instant messaging (IM) app developed by the development team at Yahoo! has surely made quite a few Yahoo! Messenger users happy – keep in mind that the sign-in issues were solved and that the updated Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone version 1.1 comes with voice searching functionality. It is now time for the Yahoo! team to smile back, not because they no longer have to work on a Java version of YM for other smartphones, but because YM for iPhone was downloaded by more than 1 million users.

Product Manager with Yahoo! Messenger, Sarah Bacon, comments: “We’re smiling this week because we hit the 1 million download mark for our Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone app. Thanks to all of our users for giving it a try and providing their feedback. We really appreciate it.”

If you are just now finding out about the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app, here is the functionality it has to provide:
- Instant Messaging: the main function of Yahoo! Messenger that allows you to socialize with your friends via IM.
- Share Photos, be it a photo you already have stored on your iPhone, or a photo you took just now.
- Stealth Settings: stay invisible when you do not want others to see you, select which users can see when you are available.
- Custom status message: type in whatever you want, including a web link, and set it as your online status.
- Recent conversations archive
- Special idle state: the app will automatically set your status to “Idle” when you for example click a link one of your friends sent you, link that takes you away from Yahoo! Messenger and towards Safari.
- Landscape keyboard mode, meaning that you can flip the iPhone on its side and type away.
- New “Report a Problem” feature that will help you in conveying your YM usage problems to the Messenger team. You can view the “Report a Problem” tab under the Settings icon.
- Voice Search.

In related news, it seems that some Mac OS X users are experiencing some problems with YM for Mac; Yahoo! is aware of this and is working on a fix. Sarah Bacon again: “For those of you having issues with the latest Mac OS X update (10.5.7) and Yahoo! Messenger for Mac, help is on the way. We’ve identified the problems causing the chat room crash and the sign-in problem, and will be releasing those fixes in a new build soon.”
