I have to say I am a big fan of Yahoo’s instant messaging application, the aptly named Yahoo! Messenger. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the platform behind the popular application will soon be opened; a Yahoo! Messenger IM API will soon be released.

Yahoo! Messenger is used by millions of people all over the world on their desktop and mobile devices. Thanks to Yahoo! Messenger all these people can easily manage their social contacts, group contacts, and presence information. They can talk to other people in real time and they can send and receive data (file transfer). In a nutshell, the Yahoo! Messenger platform is well known and trusted.

“We’re listening to those developers among you who have been telling us they want to build on that trusted platform. By exposing a new RESTful API for Yahoo! Messenger, we’re allowing you to develop your own innovative programs and tools that make the most of what the Yahoo! IM platform can offer,” commented Product Manager Dudley Wong.

As Wong explained, it should not be difficult to develop for the platform. “All you need is a little knowledge of HTTP and JSON, and you’ll be connecting with people across the world in no time, no matter what programming environment you’re using,” Wong said.

Additional details on the Yahoo! Messenger IM API will be rolled out to the Yahoo! Developer Network on June 30th.

Moving on, there are more great news you might want to know about. At CommunicAsia 2010, Yahoo! has launched a new app called Yahoo! Messenger One – for now the app is in Beta and is available for Blackberry 9000, Blackberry 9700, Blackberry 8900, and Blackberry 9630 devices. The app will be rolled out to Indonesia first in Bahasa Indonesian (the local language). To get it you need to go to http://m.yahoo.com/one.

“Yahoo! Messenger One was conceived on the premise of wanting to create an integrated and easily accessible communication experience for new-to-net mobile users, offering them a central point for their communication and content needs while on the go. The beta launch of Yahoo! Messenger One represents a refreshing approach to all your communications needs,” commented Karen Yeo, Product Marketing, Apps.
