Back in June Yahoo! announced to the world that it would be opening the platform behind the popular instant messaging application Yahoo! Messenger. The company announced at the time that a Yahoo! Messenger API would be released soon – and that’s all we heard of it. Yahoo! now came with an update on the Yahoo! Messenger API story. The company announced that the API will be released this month.

As Product Manager with Yahoo! Messenger, Dudley Wong explained, the development team is now putting the final touches on the Yahoo! Messenger API. Yahoo! is determined to finish the API and release it this month, the month of July.

“We have some last mile details to take care of but we are committed to launching the new Yahoo Messenger API very soon. Let me say that we are really excited about the response and enthusiasm that we’ve received around the opening of the platform behind our popular Yahoo! Messenger service. The team is working hard to make sure that these new APIs meet your expectations, that they are as simple as possible, and that they contain all the key features you need to develop great applications and services,” said Dudley Wong.

Yahoo! Messenger is used by millions of people all over the world on their desktop and mobile devices. Thanks to Yahoo! Messenger all these people can easily manage their social contacts, group contacts, and presence information. They can talk to other people in real time and they can send and receive data (file transfer). In a nutshell, the Yahoo! Messenger platform is well known and trusted.

The API will let developers come up with innovative tools and programs that take advantage of the Yahoo! Messenger platform. And doing so should not be terribly difficult. As David Wong explained, developers only need a bit of HTTP and JSON knowledge and they should do okay.
