Wolfram Alpha, the computation the computational knowledge engine developed by British-born physicist and Mathematica creator Stephen Wolfram, announced yesterday that its partnership with search engine DuckDuckGo has entered a new phase. To be more precise, DuckDuckGo will maintain the official Wolfram Alpha API Perl binding and will expand Wolfram Alpha integration into its site. This means the DuckDuckGo site will feature even more Wolfram Alpha functionality and datasets.

Speaking of the DuckDuckGo site, it is a search engine that puts the emphasis on privacy by not tracking your history. The DuckDuckGo site, explained Wolfram Alpha, contains less spam and offers zero-click information that pops up underneath the search box. Ever since the Wolfram Alpha API has been rolled out, DuckDuckGo integrated it so that it could offer its users dynamically computed facts.

The relationship between Wolfram Alpha and DuckDuckGo goes back a long way. Not only did DuckDuckGo integrate the Wolfram Alpha API as soon it was rolled out, but DuckDuckGO founder Gabriel Weinberg volunteered to be a Wolfram Alpha early tester. Furthermore, Weinberg is the one who developed the Wolfram Alpha Perl API binding.

Now, some words from Weinberg and Schoeller Porter, Architect, Developer Relations at Wolfram Alpha.

“Integrating Wolfram|Alpha into DuckDuckGo was a no-brainer decision, as it can provide instant answers for a broad range of general search queries that are otherwise not easy to get answers to. That’s because Wolfram|Alpha does deep processing of a lot of non-web datasets”, said Weinberg.

“Our primary goal with the launch of version 2 of the API in January was to open Wolfram|Alpha to all developers and their broad spectrum of clever ideas. Gabriel and DuckDuckGo exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit by integrating Wolfram|Alpha’s computed knowledge into web search in a compelling, relevant, and ingenious way. We’re excited to be a part of DuckDuckGo’s continued growth,” said Porter.
