If some Microsoft-developed free Windows 7 themes help you dream of your upcoming summer vacation and the fun you will have surfing some nice waves or sailing on the open seas with the wind in your hair, the Stephen Wolfram-developed computational knowledge engine Wolfram Alpha helps you have as much fun as possible in the sun by avoiding sunburns.

The development team behind Wolfram Alpha has announced that it launched some new tools to help you avoid sunburns. The team explained that it came up with the new tools while “nestled by our office heaters, drinking Swiss Miss, and dreaming of the bright sunshine.”

If you go to Wolfram Alpha and enter the query “time to sunburn”, you will be presented with the tools needed to calculate for how long you can stay in the sun without getting sunburns. You will have to provide info like your skin type, your location, and the SPF (sun protection factor) of your lotion. Once you do that, Wolfram Alpha will tell you for how long you can have fun in the sun and not get sunburns.

“The personalized results show how long you can stay in the Sun before you’re likely to burn based on the factors you reported, a Sun protection advisory recommending an SPF level, and a UV forecast for your location,” explained the Wolfram Alpha team.

Wolfram Alpha rolled out a sunburn calculator widget as well. After you tell the widget your skin type, your location, the SPF of your lotion and how long you plan to spend in the sun, and it will tell you how long it will take until you get a sunburn. Check out the widget here.

Staying informed is the best way to avoid sunburns; by staying informed I mean you should know what the UV levels for a specific location are. Wolfram Alpha offers info on UV levels as well – the predicted UV index, a UV index forecast map that you can manipulate by date and time, the typical time to sunburn based on skin type and protection levels, and a Sun protection advisory.

“So before you head out to enjoy the bright sunshine, remember sunscreen, Wolfram|Alpha, and facts!” concluded the Wolfram Alpha team.
