Windows Mobile 6.5: OS Is Done, App Sharing Is an Option

The Windows Mobile development team has come out to announce that work on the next iteration of the Windows Mobile operating system, mainly Windows Mobile 6.5, has been completed. There is a catch though: just because the operating system is “out of the oven” so to speak, this does not mean its release is imminent.

“For the record, Windows Mobile 6.5 is DONE... complete... looks really good IOHO and every bit functional,” said the Windows Mobile Development Team via Twitter. The announcement follows the release of a 12-minute video showcasing Windows Mobile 6.5’s features, video from last week’s Microsoft TechEd North America 2009 event (view here).

The interesting thing about Windows Mobile 6.5 (the first devices powered by the OS will reportedly be released onto the market this fall) is not that its development process is complete, but the fact that you will be able to share the apps you have purchased for said operating system. According to the Redmond-based software developer, you will be able to run a Windows Mobile 6.5 app on more than one device – what this means is that you may share 1 app with friends, family, colleagues, and so on. Once you purchase an app from the Windows Marketplace for Mobile (developer registrations are open – details here) you will be allowed to share that app with as many as 5 Windows Mobile powered phones. If you have a large family and you want them all to share your app, you will have to contend with picking just 5 members of your family to share with, or possibly purchasing more than one version of that app.
