The Hotmail team has not released any new bits for their mail client for some time now, but we are glad to report they have come up with the latest Windows Live Wave 3 updates which should put a big smile on your face. User feedback has been taken into consideration to give Windows Live Hotmail the features the users wanted and several new features have been implemented – all of which will be rolled out progressively in the near future.

“The Hotmail team has been hard at work since our last release in the fall, and we’ve got a bunch of new features coming out… and we’re rolling them out now! Your Hotmail account has seen a number of awesome changes in the past few months - we’ve introduced a great new look and we’ve made everything faster and easier to use. The new stuff we’ve added came from the feedback you sent in, and we hope you like what you see so far,” says the Windows Live Hotmail team.

Here is a list of new features and improvements you can expect to get with this recent update:
- Alongside the 5GB of default storage space, you will get additional space when you require it. Microsoft may set up a storage limit, but for now we have no precise details, just the Hotmail team’s assurance that “you don’t have to worry about whether to keep a message or delete it”
- From a visual point of view, you will notice that the ad banner has been moved to the side of the screen. It used to be placed right at the top, but apparently this hindered the users’ view of the inbox. Replacing the banner means that you get to see a larger number of messages.
- Social networking sites such as Twitter and Flickr are seamlessly integrated with your Hotmail account. Simply click on the Today page and see what your friends have been up to.
- More themes and a new way to get Hotmail on your smartphone.
- US an UK uses will get to test a new feature that lets them insert maps for example in messages.

In related news it seems that Hotmail’s user base has dropped between September 2007 and September 2008 from 46.2 million to 44.6 million (that is a decrease of about 4%). Gmail’s user base on the other hand has increased over the same period of time from 18.8 million to 26 million (a rise of 39%).
