Windows 8 Has RTM'd, Just as Microsoft Said
Back in July, at Microsoft’s annual Worldwide Partners Conference, Windows Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer Tami Reller announced that the upcoming Windows 8 operating system would reach RTM (Release to Manufacturing) in the first week of August.
On Wednesday, the 1st of August, Microsoft announced that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing. Microsoft went on to say that Windows Server 2012 has also been released to manufacturing. So to recap, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 have both reached the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) milestone in their development process.
“Today, I am excited to announce that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM)!” said on Wednesday Brandon LeBlanc, Windows Communications Manager at Microsoft. “This means we’ve completed the product development and testing of the product and have started handing off the final code to our OEM partners. They can now begin preparing new Windows 8 PCs and devices they’ll introduce starting with General Availability.”
When will Windows 8 hit the General Availability (GA) status? At Microsoft’s annual Worldwide Partners Conference, the aforementioned Tami Reller said that Windows 8 will reach GA status by the end of October. Shortly after, at Microsoft’s annual sales meeting, Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows and Windows Live Division, provided a precise date. Sinofsky announced that Windows 8 will reach GA (General Availability) status on the 26th of October.
“With improvements in fundamentals, enhanced storage and connectivity, newly architected subsystems, the ‘fast and fluid’ user experience, and the WinRT platform (to name a few), Windows 8 has literally thousands of new features,” said Steven Sinofsky.
While Microsoft is focusing on Windows 8 RT, the competition, Cupertino-based software developer Apple, is focusing on the success of its recently released Mountain Lion. Apple touted that with 3 million downloads in the firs 4 days after its release, Mountaion Lion is its most successful release ever.
