Here are a couple of news about longtime rivals Microsoft and Apple, news that has one thing in common: the fact that both companies have exciting products slated for a February release.

Starting with Redmond-based software giant Microsoft, the news is that a public Beta of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system will be rolled out late February, 2012. Microsoft confirmed that Windows 8 Beta will be publicly released in late February and that alongside the operating system it will offer a public preview of its Windows Store.

If you are not familiar with Windows 8 and what it will have to offer, here’s the quick lowdown: it will have a fresh new interface optimized for touch, it will feature apps that can communicate with each other, it will offer better performance, security and privacy, it will support ARM chips, and it will come with a new Windows Store from where you can get apps for Windows 8.

So far Microsoft released only a developer preview of the Windows 8 operating system. As I mentioned above, the Beta version will be released to the public in February. The RC (Release Candidate), RTM (Release to Manufacturing, and GA (General Availability) will follow later in the year.

Moving on to Cupertino-based software developer Apple, rumor on the web has it that Apple will release the iPad 3 in February, 2012. Please note that this is but a rumor that was not confirmed by Apple; also note that the name of the device has not been confirmed as iPad 3 either. The rumor has it that makers of components for the iPad 3 have started to ship the parts to OEM contractors for assembly and that the iPad 3 will be released sometime in February.

The thing is that Apple releases new versions of its products about a year apart. If the iPad 3 were to be released in February, that would be sooner than usual. But then again the iPad 2 was released sooner than usual, just 11 months after the iPad. So who knows, the rumor may be true and iPad 3 may be released this February.
