Test the new Windows 10 operating system as well as the new Edge web browser by getting one of the virtual machines (VMs) that Microsoft just released to the public.

“Windows 10 virtual machines are now available with the latest updates to Microsoft Edge and the underlying web platform. With this release, we have automated the process we use to create the virtual machines, so future updates will be available more quickly as the platform is updated,” announced Antón Molleda, Program Manager, Microsoft Edge.

Visit the Microsoft Edge Dev site to get the “Microsoft Edge on Windows 10” virtual machines that are available for Microsoft’s own Windows operating system, for Apple’s OS X, and for Linux.

On Windows, Windows 10 VMs are available for VMware, Virtual Box, and HyperV-2012.
On OS X, Windows 10 VMs are available for Parallels, Virtual Box, and VMware.
On Linux, Windows 10 VMs are available for VirtualBox.

Microsoft promises to offer support for more virtualization formats in the future. “By popular demand, we’ll also be supporting new formats for VMs, starting with Vagrant boxes (with VirtualBox) and QEMU. You can expect to see these starting in the coming weeks,” said Antón Molleda.

Who should get a Windows 10 virtual machine? These VMs are meant for developers who want to test their websites and applications on Microsoft’s Edge browser. But the simple truth of the matter is that anyone could get them. If you don’t want to upgrade to Windows 10 but you’re curious to see what the operating system has to offer, you could get one of the three Windows 10 VMs that Microsoft released to the public.

Please note that these Window 10 virtual machines have an expiration date. They will expire after 90 days. Microsoft’s recommendation is to create a snapshot after installation and roll back to it later.
