WikiTaxi: Access Wikipedia Articles with No Internet Connection
Wikipedia is one of the best places to start when looking for information on a specific topic; the annoying thing is that you need to be connected to the Internet in order to be able to read all that amount of info (this goes double for Wikipedia Mobile). With an application such as WikiTaxi 1.0.6 you get to discard the internet connection and still have access to Wikipedia articles.
“WikiTaxi enables you to read, search, and browse Wikipedia offline. No Internet connection is needed, all pages are stored in a WikiTaxi database. Because Wikipedia is constantly growing, WikiTaxi uses compression to make sure that the database stays reasonably small. The huge English Wikipedia easily fits on a 8 GB memory stick,” says WikiTaxi .
WikiTaxi will work with any Windows-based operating system, ranging from Windows 95 and 98 to Windows XP and Vista. Using the software application does not require you to install it onto your machine, but you will need to keep 8GB of space free – which should not be a problem with today’s HDDs and USB memory sticks.
In related Wikipedia news, it seems that the Encyclopaedia Britannica wants to draw back some of the users it lost in favor of Wikipedia, and plans to do this by entering the world of Web 2.0.
Jorge Cauz, President of Encyclopaedia Britannica explains: “We’re not trying to be a wiki - that’s the last thing we want to be. Britannica doesn’t offer that voyeuristic benefit. Users won’t be able to write anything they want and have it published. Each contribution will be verified and fact checked by our editors. Britannica is widely used in the academic market. Many of the top universities around the world have access to it. We want to tap into the many experts that may have something to say that could improve our content.”
Just to get a perspective on things, Encyclopaedia Britannica stacks up about 1.5 million hits per day, while Wikipedia gets a staggering 6 million.
If you would like to get WikiTaxi 1.0.6, a download location is available here.
