Rovio Entertainment just hit us with the news that it will roll out a sequel for the popular Angry Birds Star Wars game. The exciting thing is that Angry Birds Star Wars II will introduce over 30 never-before-seen characters and the option to "teleport" physical characters into the game.

Another interesting thing is that Angry Birds Star Wars II will let you choose your side. So if you want to play as a villainous pig, you can “Join the Pork Side.”

Back in October 2012, Rovio Entertainment partnered up with Lucasfilm and created a new Star Wars-themed version of it incredibly popular Angry Birds game. The new game, appropriately named Angry Birds Star Wars and described at one point by Peter Vesterbacka as “the best Angry Birds game we’ve ever done”, hit the public on the 8th of November – and since then it has been downloaded more than 100 million times by iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone, and Windows Phone 8 users around the world.

Such a popular game had to have a sequel. And so, building on the success of the first game, Rovio Entertainment and Lucasfilm came up with Angry Birds Star Wars II, which is scheduled to be released on the 19th of September. The new game will introduce a selection of over 30 never-before-seen Angry Birds Star Wars characters – and accompanying these new characters there will be a line of over 30 collectable TELEPODS figures from Hasbro. When you place the figurine onto your phone or tablet, your character of choice will be "teleported" directly into the game.

“Angry Birds Star Wars was a blockbuster hit for us and Lucasfilm with over 100 million downloads since its release. We are thrilled to be able to introduce the exciting next chapter in the Angry Birds Star Wars saga to our fans around the world,” said Jami Laes, Executive Vice President of Games at Rovio Entertainment. “Some of the most amazing character additions are versions of young Anakin, Mace Windu and Darth Maul. Hasbro’s TELEPODS technology also provides a great way to extend the experience beyond the app and bring a whole new dimension to the gameplay.”

“Hasbro worked closely with both Rovio and Lucasfilm to deliver a fully integrated TELEPODS experience with the new ANGRY BIRDS STAR WARS II app. Now fans can enjoy unprecedented and seamless dual play in both physical and digital ANGRY BIRDS experiences,” said John Frascotti, Chief Marketing Officer, Hasbro, Inc.

Back in June I reported that Rovio Entertainment expanded its agreement with Hasbro, Hasbro becoming the premier toy licensee for developing Angry Birds-themed toys and physical games. And I mentioned at the time that new toys and games based on Angry Birds Go and Angry Birds Star Wars are already planned for the fall of 2013. The aforementioned TELEPODS are part of this agreement. And I should add that Rovio confirmed that the Angry Birds Star Wards 2 launch will be accompanied by the launch of new toys, plush, books, and apparel.
