The team behind the WhatsApp messaging app recently announced that they reached an important milestone, one that no other mobile messaging service managed to achieve until now.

The milestone in question is this: WhatsApp has 400 million monthly active users now. 100 million active users started using WhatsApp in the past four months.

If you were wondering just how popular WhatsApp is, the team behind the mobile messaging service has recently shed some light on the situation. WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum announced via WhatsApp’s official blog that there are more than 400 million people who actively use the WhatsApp service every single month.

Jan Koum touted the fact that no other mobile messaging service has managed to achieve this important milestone. He also touted the fact 100 million active users were added in the last four months and the fact that WhatsApp did not spend a dime on promoting itself. Word of mouth, personal recommendations, and media coverage helped WhatsApp become popular, not targeted ads or big marketing campaigns

“When we say that you made this possible, we mean it. WhatsApp has just 50 employees, and most of us are engineers. We’ve arrived at this point without spending a dollar on targeted ads or big marketing campaigns. We’re here because of all the people who share their WhatsApp stories with co-workers, friends, and loved ones – stories we love to hear,” said Jan Koum.

Available for multiple platforms (iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia), WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app. It allows users to send messages to one another for free, via the web. So instead of pays for SMS, they can communicate via WhatsApp.

Basic messaging is just part of the functionality WhatsApp has to offer. The app can also be used to send photos and videos and share locations. WhatsApp is free for the first year – after that users are invited to pay a very small fee.
