WhatsApp Now Used by 700 Million Users around the World

Back in April 2014, I reported that the WhatsApp messaging app is used by more than 500 million people from all corners of the world. All these people, I said at the time, manage to share more than 700 million photos and more than 100 million videos every day.

It is January 2015, some 9 months later, and I have to report that the number of people who use WhatsApp has increased considerably: more than 700 million people now use WhatsApp to stay in touch with friends, family members, coworkers, and so on. These 700 million WhatsApp users manage to send over 30 billion messages on a daily basis.

To mark the occasion, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum posted the following on his Facebook:

“We’re thrilled to share that WhatsApp has more than 700 million monthly active users. Additionally, every day our users now send over 30 billion messages. As humbled and excited as we are by these numbers and our continued growth, we’re even more excited to keep building a great product in 2015. Most of all, we’re grateful that so many of you are using WhatsApp to stay in touch with your friends and family, business colleagues and classmates. We promise to continue working hard to make WhatsApp even better.

When Facebook purchased WhatsApp, Mark Zuckerberg predicted that the app will connect 1 billion people. Well, it certainly looks like things are going in that direction. If the current growth rate is maintained, it won’t be long until WhatsApp is used by 1 billion people.

I remind you that Facebook announced its intention to buy WhatsApp back in February 2014. At $19 billion, this is the largest acquisition in Facebook’s history. The $1 billion Facebook spent to purchase photo and video-sharing app Instagram seems like pigeon feed in comparison.
