WhatsApp Now Serving Half a Billion People

The WhatsApp messaging app is now being used by more than 500 million people around the world. All these active users manage to share more than 700 million photos and more than 100 million videos on a daily basis.

Having 500 million active users is a big deal, especially when you factor in the fact that WhatsApp did not spend a dime on advertising. Seems that Mark Zuckerberg was right when he said that WhatsApp will soon connect 1 billion people.

WhatsApp’s userbase continues to grow – much to Facebook’s delight, I could add.

Back in December 2013, the team behind the messaging app announced that an important milestone has been reached: 400 million active users. It was emphasized at the time that no other mobile messaging service managed to achieve a similar milestone and that more than 100 million people started using WhatsApp in the past 4 months.

By February 2014, when Facebook announced it will pay $16 billion (plus an additional $3 billion) to purchase WhatsApp, the userbase had jumped from 400 to 450 million people. Mark Zuckerberg said at the time that he is excited to partner with WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum and predicted that WhatsApp will soon connect 1 billion people.

It certainly seems that things are headed in that direction. It is now late April 2014 and WhatsApp announced that it has more than 500 million active users that manage to share more than 700 million photos and 100 million photos on a daily basis.

Facebook, the company that purchased WhatsApp, keeps growing as well. According to the latest statistics, Facebook has 1.28 billion users in total, 10.1 monthly active mobile users, 609 million daily active mobile users, and 200 million Facebook Messenger users.
