The operating system that powers the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi, Palm webOS has been updated to version 1.4 and released over the air to awaiting customers. WebOS 1.4 comes with features such as:
  • Capture, edit and share video;
  • Enhanced notifications – meaning the LED in the gesture area lights up and pulses when you have a notification. This works even if the screen is off. Furthermore, there are new notification sounds, and notification sounds in Messaging, Email, and Calendar can be customized.
  • Enhanced apps - Calendar, Phone, Messaging, and Email have new features.

Speaking of which, do you know what you can do with the enhanced Email app? If you don’t here’s the lowdown.
  • Message Sorting
You can sort messages according to date, sender, or by subject. All you need to do is open the application menu, tap Sort, then select one of the sorting options.
To search subject lines, just start typing. You can sort the search results in the same manner.
  • Email addresses and phone numbers
Let’s say you receive a message that contains either an email address or a phone number. You of course need to save that email address or phone number. To do this you need only tap and hold. The options to “Add to Contacts”, “Call” or Text” will appear.
  • Text editing
So you received an email and you want to forward it. Before forwarding it, you would like to edit the original content of the email. You can do this with the Mail app in webOS 1.4.
  • Downloading attachments
Some of the email messages you receive will have a file attached to it; or several files attached to it. The Mail app in webOS 1.4 will automatically launch the first attachment to be completely downloaded. All other attachments are downloaded in the background.

As Jon Zilber explained when Palm webOS 1.4 was released, you can expect the Mail app (and Calendar, Phone, Messaging) to work faster than ever before.
