WebOS 1.3.1 Update Does Not Add iTunes Syncing
Palm has recently announced that it would deliver an over-the-air update to its US customers – this includes Palm Pre owners and Palm Pixi owners (the Palm Pixi was released this Sunday). The update is WebOS 1.3.1, and applies to Palm customers on the Sprint or Bell networks. The update brings plenty of enhancements, but we’ll get into that later. The interesting think is that WebOS 1.3.1 does not add iTunes syncing.
As you may already know, there’s a competition between Palm and Apple that started this spring when Palm announced that the Palm pre can seamlessly sync with iTunes (iTunes 8.1.1 on Windows XP and Windows Vista as well as Mac OS X 10.3.9 through 10.5.7). Apple responded with a few well-chosen words, then updated iTunes to version 8.2.1. Palm updated WebOS to version 1.1 to once again add iTunes syncing capabilities. When Apple updated iTunes to version 9.0.1 it once again broke Palm Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes – so Palm released WebOS 1.2.1.
The latest version of iTunes is 9.0.2. As you may have already guessed, it once again breaks Palm Pre’s syncing capabilities. We were actually expecting Palm to announce that WebOS 1.3.1 fixes this issue, but this isn’t the case. Let’s look on the bright side shall we? Let’s see some WebOS 1.3.1 highlights:
- Palm Synergy incorporates data from your Outlook EAS, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn and Yahoo! accounts.
- If you manage your contacts and calendar accounts via Yahoo!, it is integrated in the Contacts and Calendar applications.
- You can use Yahoo! IM in the webOS Messaging app (for Sprint customers only).
- Improved formatting in forwarded email messages.
- New shortcuts to be used in email for the most common actions (mark messages as unread for example).
- Copy and forward individual text and IM messages.
