Intego, company that specializes in providing security solutions for Mac, has announced the launch of the first malware scanner for iOS powered devices. The malware scanner in question is called VirusBarrier iOS and is based on VirusBarrier X6, the award-winning antimalware tool for Mac OS X. VirusBarrier iOS can scan files and can detect spyware, Trojans, adware, hacker tools, dialers, keyloggers, and other security threats that could impact Mac, Windows or Unix systems.

The files VirusBarrier iOS can scan include the following: files received by email (or email attachments), archives, files downloaded from Safari, files accessed by apps that support inter-app file transfers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDFs, HTML files, JavaScript files, EXE files, .dll files, and so on), files stored on remote locations (Dropbox, iDisks and WebDav disks), and files stored on iOS devices.

VirusBarrier iOS performs scans for dangerous files in the background. The thing is that it cannot perform automatic scans or scheduled scans and that’s because of the secure design of iOS. All scans must be initiated by the user (on-demand scans). Once VirusBarrier iOS detects an infected file, it repairs it. It will always be able to detect dangerous files because it automatically updates its malware definitions (they are generally updated twice a week and sooner than that if new threats are discovered).

There is one small thing that may deter you from getting VirusBarrier iOS – the fact that there are no known malware for iOS. Here’s what Intego had to say about this:

“The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch represent a new vector for bringing files into a home or business network. While there is no known malware for iOS, files can flow through these devices into computers at home and at work by e-mail, or via remote locations such as MobileMe or Dropbox. Mac and Windows viruses, malware and worms will take any path they can to get into home and work computers, and can easily be passed on to friends and co-workers directly from an iOS device, even though they do not affect iOS devices.”

If you would like to get VirusBarrier iOS, you can purchase it from the
App Store for $2.99.
