Video Calling in Skype for iPhone 3.0

What were you doing on the 30th of December? Personally I was back home, shooting the breeze with my family. The good people at Skype on the other hand were quite busy – busy pushing out Skype 3.0 to the world (iTunes link). While everybody was busy prepping for the New Year’s party, Skype was rolling out Skype 3.0, an update that comes with a very interesting new feature: video calling.

Get Skype for iPhone version 3.0 and you will be able to make video calls to other Skype users, be they Skype for iPhone users or Skype for desktop users (Skype for Windows or Skype for Mac). If you are on iOS 4.0 and have an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 4th generation, you will be able to place two-way video calls to other Skype users. You will be able to call someone with Skype for Windows 4.2 and above, Skype for Mac 2.8 and above, Skype for Linux and the ASUS videophone, and of course, someone with Skype for iPhone 3.0.

You can place a video call to someone with an iPod Touch 3rd generation or an iPad – this will be a one-way video call. You won’t be able to see that someone, but he or she will be able to receive the call and see you.

“With video calling representing approximately 40% of all Skype-to-Skype minutes for the first six months of 2010, our users have been eager to get Skype video calling on their mobile phones,” said Neil Stevens, general manager of Skype’s consumer business. “By bringing video to mainstream users at their home or work via their desktops, on the go with their mobiles, or into their living room via their TV, Skype has made it possible for millions of people to share video moments wherever they are.”

In related news, it must be said that in the Top 10 Free iPhone/iPod Touch Apps of 2010, Skype came in at number 4. The top 10 was part of my last post for 2010; in case you missed it, here it is again:
