Microsoft recently announced that it updated its Skype instant messaging and VoIP client to version 7.0. Get this latest release and you will be able to video call any of your Lync contacts – and your Lync contacts will be able to video call you.

This is not the first time that Skype shows Lync some love. Last year, Microsoft gave Skype and Lync users the option to communicate with one another via instant messages. This year, Microsoft is giving Skype and Lync users the option to communicate via instant messages and video calls.

And next year…well next year Microsoft will rebrand Lync as Skype for Business. Microsoft Lync, the instant messaging client that was originally called Microsoft Office Communicator will be rebranded as Skype for Business and will be rolled out to the public in the first half of 2015. It will feature a familiar interface, one-touch call transferring capabilities, and more.

Getting back to Skype 7.0, the option to video call Lync contacts is available for Windows only. At this time, you can make video calls to Lync contacts only if you get Skype for Windows desktop client version 7.0 – which is available for download right here on FindMySoft.

BJ Haberkorn, director of product marketing for the Lync Team, explained that support for more platforms will be added in the future.

“We will extend support to the Skype clients on additional platforms, starting with Android and iOS in the coming months. We will add support for SkypeIDs and make it easier to find and add contacts from the worldwide Skype directory when the next version of Lync becomes Skype for Business in the first half of 2015. These planned improvements to Lync Skype connectivity are just one example of how Skype for Business will keep and improve on all of the capabilities of Lync,” said BJ Haberkorn.
