The Flipboard social news magazine is no longer available exclusively as a mobile app. Alongside the Flipper app for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, there’s a new Flipboard web app. This means that you can use Flipboard on your desktop, within your browser. Go to Flipboard.com, sign in, and enjoy.

Way back in 2013, Google announced that it would be retiring Google Reader, its RSS feed aggregator. Even though Google Reader had a steady base of loyal users, Google decided to pull the plug and direct its resources towards other projects. So I started to look for alternatives. I found many terrible ones and many great ones. I’m glad to say that Flipboard was among the great ones.

The Flipboard app impressed me from the get-go. It has a fluid, magazine-like interface. It can be used to monitor RSS feeds, social feeds, and topics of interest. It helps users discover, view, and share content from across the web and from social networks.

Sadly though, I did not stay with Flipboard – I went with Feedly instead, in case you were curious. Why you ask? For the simple reason that I needed something to work on my desktop. Flipboard is brilliant on a mobile phone and it was a pleasure to use it on my Android. But I couldn’t stay on my phone all day long. I needed something that worked on my desktop, within my browser, just like Google Reader did.

Much to my astonishment, the Flipboard team recently announced the launch of a Flipboard web app. The Flipboard social news magazine can be used on the desktop, within the browser. So if you don’t want to use Flipboard on your iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone, you can use it in your browser. That’s great news indeed!
