Google recently announced that Android 4.4 will be called KitKat. The company added that to celebrate the new Android 4.4 KitKat, it will be giving away a Google Nexus 7 tablet, Google Play credit, and free Kit Kat Minis.

Senior Vice President at Google Sundar Pichai recently announced via Twitter that the Android mobile operating system is being used by more than 1 billion people all over the world. The tweet was accompanied by the image of a KitKat-themed Android statue (see below). Why is that? For the simple reason that the upcoming Android 4.4 will carry the codename KitKat.

Soon after that the official KitKat Twitter account introduced KitKat's official android.com/kitkat website. The tweet was accompanied by this image.

The Android KitKat website takes a quick look at Android’s story and briefly presents all previous Android versions: 1.5 Cupcake, 1.6 Donut, 2.0 Éclair, 2.2 Froyo, 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.0 Honeycomb, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The website explains that Google’s aim with KitKat is to "make an amazing Android experience available for everybody." It also sheds some light on why the Android team decided to go with this name:

“Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, Kit Kat!”

To celebrate the release of Android 4.4 KitKat, Google is running a cool promo that gives you the chance to win a Google Nexus 1, Google Play credit, and free Kit Kat Minis. Said promo will start on Friday, September 6th.
