Do you have an iPhone 3G S and want to software unlock the device so that you can use it on other carrier networks? If that is the case, then you should know that there are two tools at your disposal. The first one comes from George Hotz, the one who managed to hack the original iPhone back in 2007. The tool is called purplesn0w, and it was released just a few days ago. Now George Hotz announced that the soft unlock tool purplesn0w has reached RC2 status.

As an RC2 (Release Candidate 2), purplesn0w comes with the following fixes:
3G(the network speed) issues fixed
Now only patches one file, CommCenter
Leaves no traces on your baseband after it runs. 0 bytes of RAM
Much more clean and reliable.

The second tool that you can use to unlock your iPhone 3G S comes from the iPhone Dev Team. The tool I am talking about is ultrasn0w 0.9, an update to the previously released ultrasn0w 0.8 (which was released at the same time as redn0w 0.8, the iPhone Dev Team’s jailbreak tool).

The update ultrasn0w 0.9 unlock tool comes with the following fixes and enhancements:
Works on both 3G and 3GS
Works on hacktivated devices
Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device
Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever. (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out).
Doesn’t install any additional daemon
Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues
Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :)
Is available now via Cydia. Source repo is http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (that last “0” in ultrasn0w is a zero!)

There has been an interesting competition between George Hotz and the iPhone Dev Team recently. The Dev Team initially announced that it will postpone the release of its iPhone 3G S jailbreak tool, spurring Hotz to respond by releasing his own jailbreak tool, purplera1n. The Dev Team was then forced to roll out ultrasn0w and redsn0w, but it did not end there. George Hotz then released another tool, the purplesn0w software unlock tool – and now there’s this piece of news about the purplesn0w and ultrasn0w update.
