Here’s one more reason to leave the Microsoft developed Windows and the Apple developed Mac OS X operating systems behind and switch to Ubuntu: Canonical has officially announced the launch of new support services for Ubuntu desktop users. This includes the home Ubuntu desktop user as well as the small business that plans to use Ubuntu as a cost cutting means.

The French Gendarmerie Nationale for example switched from Windows to Canonical’s Ubuntu and saved millions in the process. Now the Gendarmerie Nationale uses nothing else but Ubuntu and could not be happier about it.

Out of all the open source desktops out there, Ubuntu is the fastest growing one. Millions of people from all over the world use the OS at home and at their workplace – and now that Canonical’s team of experts can provide them with installation support and ongoing assistance with configuration and applications, they can make the most of what the operating system has to offer.

Director of Canonical's Corporate Services division, Steve George, comments: “Canonical's Desktop Support Services provides an easy, inexpensive way to get Ubuntu up and running in the home, home office and small business – reaching the vast majority of computer users. With our team supporting them, Ubuntu is ideal for people who just want their computer to work, where the goal is to get up and running with no fuss, focusing on the things they want to accomplish.”

Desktop Support Services from Canonical comes in three flavors:
Starter Desktop Support Services: installation, set-up and basic functionality support.
Advanced Desktop Support Services: file and settings migration, desktop publishing, personal accounting support.
Professional Desktop Support Services: setting up machines on the corporate network, integrating Ubuntu machines into existing IT services, setting up desktop virtualization support. This last offering is meant for the business customer who uses Ubuntu as his main environment.
