Twitter for iPhone Official App is Live
You can forget about 3rd party Twitter apps for the iPhone now that the official Twitter for iPhone app has been launched by the development team behind the popular social networking and micro-blogging service. The application is available for download straight from Apple’s App Store (check out the download link at the bottom) at absolutely no charge whatsoever.
“Comprehensive analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes App Store showed very plainly that people were looking for an app from Twitter—we didn't have one so they generally got confused and gave up. Obviously, we saw room for improvement. Starting today, Twitter for iPhone and iPod touch is available for free on the iTunes App Store,” commented co-founder and Creative Director of Twitter, Biz Stone
Biz Stone went on to say that the newly released official Twitter for iPhone app takes “the Twitter experience to a whole new level of awesomeness.”
Back in April, Twitter announced that it acquired Tweetie and hired Tweetie developer Loren Brichter, a.k.a. Atebits. The newly released official iPhone client is in fact an updated version of Tweetie. What Twitter did was acquire Tweetie and turn it into the official Twitter for iPhone app, and make the app that used to carry a $2.99 price tag, free. Loren Brichter is currently a key member on Twitter’s mobile team and is deeply involved in the development of Twitter for iPhone.
iPhone users who are familiar with Tweetie will find that Twitter for iPhone is not that different from the original app. Just like with the old app, you can send tweets, send direct messages to friends, see what others are saying, share photos, videos and links. Unlike the old app, the app’s search capabilities have been updated, you can use the app even if you don’t have a Twitter account, you can create a Twitter account from within the app, and the retweet button is more accessible.
Twitter for iPhone is basically Tweetie 3.0. If you get Tweetie for iPhone, Tweetie 2.0 will be deleted from the device.
If you would like to get Twitter for iPhone, you can download the app straight from the App Store here.
