More good news for Mac OS X users! Earlier today we were announcing that the Mac App Store has been rolled out just like Apple announced back in December. The Mac App Store, which is available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X 10.6.6 update, is home to more than 1,000 free and paid apps. You can learn more about the Mac App Store here.

We now have to report on the launch of the Twitter for Mac client. The app is available on the aforementioned Mac App Store, it is one of the 1,000+ apps available in the Mac App Store.

“Twitter is proud to introduce an appropriately slick and simple desktop application for Mac computers,” announced Carolyn Penner, Twitter Communications. “Twitter for Mac has launched today as part of the Mac App Store. This app gives Twitter users another fast and convenient way to stay connected to what they care about the most. Tweets appear in real-time (using our streaming API), and the app auto-shortens URLs and has lots of useful keyboard shortcuts.”

The Twitter for Mac app is based on the Tweetie for Mac app, the desktop client developed by Loren Brichter a.k.a. “Atebits”. Back in April Twitter acquired Tweetie and welcomed Atebits on its team. Since the acquisition the Twitter team and Atebits have been hard at work – so far they rolled out the official Twitter for iPhone app and now the Twitter for Mac client.

“We acquired atebits with a focus on launching our own Twitter iPhone application,” added Carolyn Penner. “Since then, we’ve been asked repeatedly for a new version of Tweetie for Mac. We decided that the new version fits well into our goal of ensuring that mainstream users will have the best possible experience on popular platforms. We hope you enjoy it.”
