Popular micro-blogging site Twitter has announced that because it wants you to always be up-to-date on important tweets, it has launched push notifications for @mentions. It doesn’t matter if the Twitter for iPhone app is not up and running; if someone mentions you in a tweet, you will receive a push notification about it.

“We want to make sure you see important Tweets even when you’re not looking at Twitter at the moment. Whenever an account that you follow mentions you, you’ll immediately receive a notification. You’ll know who is talking to or about you on Twitter, and you’ll be able to continue the conversation in real-time,” announced Product Manager for Twitter Mobile and Devices, Leland Rechis.

Please note that push notifications for @mentions are currently available on SMS and work only with the latest version of Twitter for iPhone, version 3.2.1 ( iTunes link ). To turn on SMS notifications, you have to go to twitter.com/devices and check the boxes under “Text message notifications”.

It doesn’t stop there – Twitter also rolled out push notifications for Messages to Twitter for iPhone. Rechis said the Twitter team is doing its best to turn on push notifications for Message to Twitter for Android and Twitter of Windows Phone.

“In addition to @mentions, we’re also bringing push notifications for Messages to Twitter for iPhone, as we’ve already done with SMS and Twitter for Blackberry. We’re working hard to introduce this feature to Twitter for Android and Twitter for Windows Phone soon,” said Leland Rechis.

In related news, Twitter recently rolled out two changes meant to cater to the needs of an international userbase. 14 new countries and 6 new cities have been added to Trending Topics – that would be the first change. Twitter now uses the power of Google Translate to translate tweets – that would be the second change.
