Popular social networking and micro-blogging online service Twitter touted the fact that, at an international level, it is growing at a rapid pace. To back its claims, Twitter has provided some figures to put things in perspective. Here are those figures:

Tweets

More than 200 million Tweets are sent out on a daily basis. At the start of 2010 a mere 50 million tweets were sent out on a daily basis; and by the end of 2010, the number increased to 65 million. The growth is even more impressive if we take a look a few years back. In 2007, some 5,000 tweets were sent out each and every day. Then in 2008 the number increased to 300,000. In 2009 the number increased some more, to 2.5 million at the start of the year and 35 million by the end of the year.

So to sum it up, the number of tweets that are being sent out daily increased from 5,000 in 2007 to 200 million in 2011. 200 million tweets is the equivalent of a 10 million-page book; it would take you more than 31 years to finish reading it.

Twitter apps
If you were to count all the Twitter apps that were out there in 2010, you had to stop somewhere around the 150,000 mark. If you were to count them today, you would notice that the number of apps has increased considerably. There are now more than 1 million Twitter apps out there. Here’s something that is even more impressive: new Twitter apps are registered at a rate of 1 every 1.5 seconds.

Twitter team
With Twitter’s popularity practically skyrocketing, it’s only normal that its team increase as well. For the past year the Twitter team has increased from 250 people up to 600 people.

“We’ve come very far in a short time,” said Twitter. “Thank you for everything you’ve done to help get us here and for inspiring us to work even harder. We can’t wait for you to see what we have planned to make Twitter even better.”
