Here is some great piece of news for the Twitter fan that lives in the United Kingdom (UK). The team behind the micro-blogging site has announced that if you live in the UK and your mobile carrier of choice is O2, then you can Twitter your heart out via SMS. You will be charged a standard fee of course for all outgoing SMS messages, but incoming messages will not cost you a thing.

Co-founder and Creative Director of Twitter, Biz Stone, comments: “Full, two-way interaction with Twitter over SMS is now available for everyone who uses O2, the largest mobile operator in the UK. There are no extra fees associated with Twittering over SMS on the 02 network—standard or in bundle rates apply for updating your account and receiving tweets over SMS is free so Tweet your heart out!”

It may seem like a piece of cake to Twitter via SMS over O2 in the UK, and for the most part it is, but before you can start tweeting you have to perform a simple task first first. If you have an Apple developed iPhone, or any other mobile device, you need to visit the account setting page (click here) and activate your mobile phone. If you want to save it in your address book, the Twitter shortcode in the UK is 86444.

With this announcement, the option to Twitter via SMS in the UK, Biz Stone made sure to remind us on the micro-blogging site’s position on texting: “Twitter started with a strong focus on texting and we continue to provide SMS access around the world.”

It must be said that Twitter inked a similar deal back in March, with Vodafone. The purpose of the deal was to allow Vodafone customers to send and receives updates from Twitter on their mobile phone – so basically, the same deal that has now been struck with O2.
