Popular social networking and micro-blogging site Twitter announced yesterday that in order to help you discover more on Twitter, it is rolling out two new features. The first feature is meant to help you uncover if anything related to you is happening on Twitter. “Just click on the new tab with your @username, and you’ll be able to see which of your Tweets are Favorites, plus the latest Retweets (of your Tweets), Tweets directed to you, and your new Followers,” explained Twitter.

The second new feature Twitter introduced is meant to offer you a rich new source of discovery. It does that by providing a centralized location where the latest Favorites, Retweets, and Follows from the people you follow on Twitter are highlighted. Twitter touted the fact that it is now “easier than ever to explore Twitter, connect with people, and discover what’s happening around the world.”

I started this article by with the words “popular social networking and micro-blogging site Twitter.” To get an idea just how popular Twitter is, let me tell you how many tweets are sent out daily and how many Twitter apps are out there. Here goes:

More than 200 million Tweets are sent out on a daily basis. At the start of 2010 some 50 million tweets were sent out on a daily basis; and by the end of 2010, the number increased to 65 million. The growth is even more impressive if we take go back a few years. In 2007, some 5,000 tweets were sent out each and every day. Then in 2008 the number increased to 300,000. In 2009 the number increased some more, to 2.5 million at the start of the year and 35 million by the end of the year.

There are now more than 1 million Twitter apps out there. If you were to count all the Twitter apps that were out there in 2010, you had to stop somewhere around the 150,000 mark. If you were to count them today, you would notice that the number of apps has increased to 1 million. New Twitter apps are registered at a rate of 1 every 1.5 seconds.
