Social networking and micro-blogging site Twitter has come out with new figures to showcase just how popular it is among users around the world. Yesterday, the 8th of September, Twitter announced that at an international level, it has a grand total of 100 million active users. “Now, 100 million active users around the globe turn to Twitter to share their thoughts and find out what’s happening in the world right now,” announced Twitter.

Out of the 100 million active users, 50% of them log into Twitter on a daily basis to see the tweets from the people they follow and to post tweets of their own. 40% of the 100 million active users skip the last part – they log in to see tweets, but do not post tweets of their own. They “simply sign in to listen to what’s happening in their world” explained Twitter.

Twitter used this occasion showcase who uses the micro-blogging service:
- 35 global heads of state and more than 40% of the top global religious leaders.
- In the US, Twitter is used by 84% of state governors, every major candidate for President, and every Cabinet agency.
- In the US, Twitter is used by two thirds of the NBA and every team in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS.
- Twitter is used by more than 99% of America's top 200 non-profit organizations.
- Out of all the artists who were on Billboard’s Top 100 musicians of 2010, 87% are using Twitter.
- All the top 50 Nielsen-rated TV shows are on Twitter.

This isn’t the first time that Twitter boasts about its popularity. Back in August it touted its record yearly growth and announced that more than 200 million tweets are sent out on a daily basis (that's the equivalent of a 10 million-page book that would take more than 31 years to read), that there are more than 1 million Twitter apps out there (they're being rolled out at a rate of 1 every 1.5 seconds), and that its team is now made up of 600 people.
