Twitter Enhancements Cater to an International Audience
The internet and popular social networking and micro-blogging site Twitter are an international thing. People all over the world go online to gather useful information or just have a bit of fun; people from all corners of the globe use Twitter to convey messages and stay up-to-date on what their friends are doing (click here to see some interesting info about Twitter usage around the world).
Product Manager with Twitter, Jinen Kamdar, recently announced two changes that were implemented to cater to Twitter’s international userbase.
Change #1 – Trending Topics
Trending Topics, the feature that offers a quick snapshot of the most tweeted-about topics on Twitter to help people discover he "most breaking" news stories from across the world, now covers 14 new countries and 6 new cities.
The countries in question are: Argentina, Australia, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, Venezuela.
The cities in question are: Detroit, Miami, Minneapolis, Rio De Janeiro, Sydney, Toronto.
Change #2 – Google Translate
No matter what Hollywood would have you think, not everyone in the world speaks English. In the movie world, even you speak slowly enough, everyone will understand what you’re saying. That is not the case in the real world. To understand a foreign language you need to either learnt that language, or use a translation tool. Twitter opted for the second option. Twitter now uses the power of Google Translate to, well, translate tweets.
“We are now using Google Translate to display Tweet translations in the details pane to give people more access to what people are talking about around the world,” announced Jinen Kamdar. “This feature is currently available to a very small percentage of users and will be rolling out to everyone over the coming weeks.”
