Twitter Announces New Feature: Lists

The development team behind popular micro-blogging site is not sitting still for a moment. After announcing that Twitter will be integrated into MySpace, AIM, Bebo and AOL.com last week, Twitter has another surprise up its sleeve: it is currently testing a new feature called “Lists”. For the time being the new feature is being tested on a small subset of users so as to put it through its paces and work out all the bugs. But when it will be released to the masses – and Twitter says it will be soon – it will let any Twitter user out there create a list of other Twitter users and then share it with his contacts.

Perhaps List Project Lead Nick Kallen can explain it better: “The idea is to allow people to curate lists of Twitter accounts. For example, you could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts of all time, athletes, local businesses, friends, or any compilation that makes sense. Lists are public by default (but can be made private) and the lists you've created are linked from your profile. Other Twitter users can then subscribe to your lists. This means lists have the potential to be an important new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts.”

One question comes to mind: why did Twitter come up with such a feature? According to Kallen, the micro-blogging site received numerous requests from people that wanted access to a better way of organizing info on Twitter. And by people I mean regular users as well as developers – more info a the Lists API, which will let allows devs to add Lists support to their Twitter apps, will be released in the coming days

For the time being the Lists feature is still in testing phase. Once the tests are complete it will be rolled out to all Twitter users out there.
