Yahoo! Messenger is used by millions of people all over the world on their desktop and mobile devices. Thanks to Yahoo! Messenger all these people can easily manage their social contacts, group contacts, and presence information. They can talk to other people in real time and they can send and receive data (file transfer). In a nutshell, the Yahoo! Messenger platform is well known and trusted.

Last month Yahoo! announced to the world that it would be opening the platform behind the popular instant messaging application Yahoo! Messenger. Yahoo! said at the time that “a new RESTful API for Yahoo! Messenger” would be released to help developers build on the Yahoo! Messenger platform.

The opening of the Yahoo! Messenger platform was announced in June – by July, nothing had happened. But that didn’t mean Yahoo! was messing about. Oh no, Yahoo! announced it was busy putting the last touches on the Yahoo! Messenger API and that it will finish it this month, the month of July.

True to its word, Yahoo! did manage to put the finishing touches on opening of the platform behind its popular Yahoo! Messenger service. And once it did so it rolled out the Yahoo! Messenger IM SDK.

“I’m happy to announce that we’ve opened up the Yahoo! Messenger platform for developers. We tried to make our SDK as simple to use as possible. We’ve exposed a new REST API for the Yahoo! Messenger platform — the same API that we use with our own products. So we know that it’s rock solid. In fact, all you need is a little knowledge of HTTP and JSON and you’ll be up and running in no time, no matter what programming environment you’re using. The SDK contains all the key Yahoo! Messenger features that you’ve come to expect, including real-time presence, contact-list management, instant messaging, file transfers, and user-image management,” announced Product Manager with Yahoo! Messenger, Dudley Wong.

Additional details on the Yahoo! Messenger IM SDK are available here.
