Rickrolling is a bait and switch tactic commonly used online. The rickroller posts a link that claims to be relevant to the subject – but the link takes the unsuspecting user that clicks on it to a webpage where he can view Rick Astley perform “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The user could pick up on the Rickrolling attempt, but the person that posts the links usually masks of obfuscates it (like this).

Cerulean Studios, the company behind multiprotocol instant messaging app Trillian, has recently released Trillian 4.2 for Windows for public Beta testing. This Beta version comes with Rickrolling protection – among other things.

When you hover your mouse over a link in Trillian 4.2 for Windows Beta, the instant messaging application will show you a preview image. This will help you detect any Rickrolling attempts. It will also help you avoid any NSFW (not safe for work) links.

Here are the other bits and pieces you can expect to get from Trillian 4.2 for Windows Beta:

Windows Live
  • Sign into Windows Live Messenger from multiple locations.
  • Improved file transfer speed.
  • Added support for mobile messaging.

Notifications
  • Use notifications to directly re-tweet, reply to a tweet, and interface with mail right away

MetaContact
  • The MetaContact window will automatically switch if when talking to a MetaContact, you receive a message from another of their usernames.
  • Drag and drop a contact on top of another to combine them into a MetaContact.

Popular Terms
  • The Wikipedia data is more up-to-date; for each popular term detected, more relevant links are provided.

Activity History
  • As explained by Cerulean Studios: “A polished look and powerful new asset view feature that lets you browse through images sent and received help improve history.”

Setup
  • The installation wizard has done away with some screens in an effort to get new users ready to play with Trillian in less time.

Skin Packs
  • New Icon Packs
  • Emoticon and Sound Packs have been moved to a more prominent location in Preferences.
