Track and Limit How Much You Use Your Phone with the Moment App

We tend to use our phones a bit too much. We spend too much time on our phones instead of enjoying real life. If you’re aware of this fact and you want to do something about it, I present to you Kevin Holesh’s Moment app.

“I wrote Moment for myself,” said Holesh. “I find myself ignoring my family and friends in favor of my iPhone. Sometimes that’s okay, like when I’m looking up who starred in Men In Black with Will Smith on IMDB, but I really should be concentrating on the present moment and the people I love around me. I’m lucky enough to have a loving family and stellar friends, I should enjoy them every chance I get. Facebook, Pinterest, and texting can wait.”

I regularly go out with a certain group of friends. One of them has a strict rule: no phones while we’re together. But when she goes to the bathroom, I immediately pick up my phone and check my Facebook, my inbox and my texts. Instead of talking to my friends, I check the latest Facebook updates, read emails, send out some texts, and so on. Why do I do that? I should be socializing more and using my phone less!

Faced with a similar problem, Kevin Holesh decided to do something about it. He came up with Moment, an app that does two things: it shows you how much time you spend on your phone and it lets you set usage limits. This isn’t an app that encourages you to give up your smartphone. No, not at all! It is an app that helps you visualize how much you use your smartphone and nudges you towards using it less and enjoying real life more.

Moment App – Main Features
  • Runs silently in the background. Holesh explained that the app is meant to be invisible.
  • Automatically tracks how much you use your phone.
  • Tracks how many times you pick up your iPhone each day.
  • Tracks where you go each day and plots your travels on a map.
  • Set daily usage limits; a warning sound is played when you exceed the limit.
  • Select a subtle reminder sound and set occasional nudges throughout the day.
Moment is currently an iOS-only app. Get it from Apple’s App Store here.
An Android version is in the works. Sign up here if you want to be notified when Moment for Android is released.
