The Mozilla Messaging team has announced that it finally wrapped up work on Thunderbird 3.1, codename Lanikai. You can now forget the Betas and the Release Candidates and download the final, stable version of Thunderbird 3.1. The application is available for download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux users – there are in total 46 localized versions.

"Mozilla Messaging is proud to announce that Thunderbird 3.1 is now available for download Thunderbird 3.1, based on the Gecko 1.9.2 platform, was built by a community of passionate contributors, experienced developers, security experts, localization and support communities, and thousands of active testers,” announced Mozilla Messaging’s Mark Banner.

Here is what you can expect to get from Thunderbird 3.1:
- The Mail Account Setup Wizard, with the hundreds of new ISP settings it got, should make it a lot easier to set up Thunderbird. To set up a new mail account you need only provide your name, email and password – Thunderbird 3.1 does the rest.
- Message indexing is faster than in previous versions. This means users are offered search results a lot faster.
- You can filter against search terms, tags, starred messages, address book contacts, new emails, and attachments with the new Quick Filter Toolbar.
- There’s a new Migration Assistant that “gives Thunderbird 2 users a way to choose the new features in Thunderbird 3.1 or to keep their current features and settings.
- There’s a new Saved Files Manger that shows all the files you downloaded to your computer.
- Improved stability, memory and password handling/

Wondering what the name Lanikai (as in codename Lanikai) is all about? I’ve said it before, and I am going to say it again for those of you that haven’t been paying attention: Lanikai is a Hawaiian beach located on the windward coast of Oahu (the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands). It is a small beach, measuring just half a mile (that’s about 800m, for the European reader) considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

If you would like to get Thunderbird 3.1, you can download the application here.
