Thunderbird 2.0.0.19, Additional Security Issues Fixed

Mozilla has recently released yet another update to their mail client, Thunderbird version 2.0.0.19, which just as Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 is meant to address a couple of security vulnerabilities that affect the software program. A total of 7 security holes have been plugged, none of them deemed as critical.

For those of you that do not already know this, Mozilla uses a 4 tier rating system when it comes to security vulnerabilities that affect their software applications: low, moderate, high, and critical. Five of the security issues in question have been classified as moderate, meaning that because “they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps” they cannot receive a higher rating (high or critical). The other two vulnerabilities have been deemed as low (minor data leaks, denial of service attacks, things of that nature).

It must be noted that the 5 moderate vulnerabilities mentioned above also plagued Firefox 3.0, but they were fixed back in December, 2008 when Mozilla issued the Firefox 3.0.5 update. At the time the Mozilla Foundation also released what was supposed to be the final update to the now defunct Firefox 2.0 browser, Firefox 2.0.0.19. The thing is that someone in the Mozilla camp slipped up (forgot to include one security update) and Mozilla was consequently forced to release an additional update, Firefox 2.0.0.20.

If you use Mozilla’s mail client and would like to stay protected from all the usual nasties that one can expect to encounter online, then you are advised to update. Keeping an up-to-date and patched system is a crucial step in ensuring that you stay safe in an increasing threatscape.

In related Thunderbird news, it must be noted that Mozilla has also put out the first Beta version of Thunderbird 3, the future of this mail client.
