Why are celebrities dangerous?

Whenever you go online to find something, there’s a chance that you’ll end up on a malicious website. This is especially true when searching for information about celebrities. The bad guys know a lot of people are fascinated by celebrities, and so they use various dirty tricks to lure fans to malware-spreading websites.

“Consumers today remain fascinated with celebrity culture and go online to find the latest pop culture news,” said Gary Davis, chief consumer security evangelist at Intel Security. “With this craving for real-time information, many search and click without considering potential security risks. Cybercriminals know this and take advantage of this behavior by attempting to lead them to unsafe sites loaded with malware. As a result, consumers need to understand what precautions to take to enable safe online experiences.”

Intel Security (formerly McAfee) has been studying this phenomenon for the past 10 years now. And each year for the past decade, the security company reveals a list celebrities who are having their fame put to malicious use. All the celebrity names on the list have a high risk of leading to viruses and malware when you search for them online – especially if you add "torrent" or "free mp4" to the query.

What can I do to be safe?

Look for information on reputable websites. Stay away from websites you know nothing about or sites that show clear signs they’re not to be trusted.

Ideally, you’d want to stay clear of torrent sites. If you’re not going to stay away, at least make sure you know what you’re doing. Learn to spot the telltale signs.

Use security software to stay safe. McAfee WebAdvisor for example can protect against malicious websites and browser exploits.

"Next time you want to find out the latest news on your favourite celeb, first ensure that your devices have been secured with a trusted and comprehensive security software and don’t forget to download the free McAfee WebAdvisor tool. Also, stick to ONLY those sites that are marked green. Awareness begins with education," said Anindita Mishra, Intel Security’s Cybermum in India.
