Phones have gotten so powerful nowadays that you would not be wrong to compare them with a miniature version of the computer you have at home; and since they are in essence the same, they need adequate protection from all the threats and nasties that are in the wild. After tackling the issue of Windows 7 protection, Kaspersky is also focusing on smartphones with Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 – now available in Beta.

“The new version of Kaspersky Mobile Security is unrivalled in terms of cutting-edge technologies, providing an unprecedented level of protection against the wide range of threats facing smartphone users,” says Kaspersky Labs.

The only thing that remains the same as in previous versions of Kaspersky Mobile Security is the antivirus scanner which automatically checks all incoming objects, all modified objects, and performs on-demand scans. Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 also features an integrated firewall and an auto-update feature. But what are the new bits and pieces in this smartphone security solution?

If you manage to lose your smartphone, it is now possible to password protect the device so that nobody can gain access to your data. The feature is called “SMS Block” and can be activated by means of a “hidden SMS message”. Now if you cannot locate your smartphone and feat someone has stole it and may have the technical capabilities to hack it, you can simply delete all the data stored on the device. This feature is called “SMS Clean” and functions in the same manner as “SMS Block”, just that it will delete every piece of data stored on the phone’s memory and memory cards.

There are other theft-protection features such as “SIM Watch” which will inform the user when the original SIM card has been replaced (which will most likely be the first thing the thief will do) and “SMS Find” which uses GPS to locate your lost/stolen smartphone.

If you install Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 onto your child’s smartphone, you can limit the numbers they can call or text. Additionally, you can use “SMS Find” to track down the whereabouts of your child.
