As 2014 comes to an end, Facebook looks back at the topics that captured the public’s attention throughout the year. The millions and millions of Facebook users around the world used the social network to talk about all sorts of things. But the most popular topics of the year were…the FIFA 2014 World Cup, the Ebola virus outbreak, and the elections in Brazil.

The most talked-about topic on Facebook this 2014 was the FIFA World Cup. Before and during this event, Google provided easy access to lots of useful information. Once the event was over, Google shed some light on what the world searched for during the World Cup.

  1. World Cup – the 2014 World Cup took place in Brazil this summer. The world’s best teams competed against one another and in the end, Germany took home the World Cup.
  2. Ebola virus outbreak – thousands of people died in the most widespread Ebola outbreak in history. Speaking about Ebola, it was the most searched query of 2014 on Yahoo!
  3. Elections in Brazil – Socialist Party candidate Eduardo Campos died in a plane crash and former Environment Minister Marina Silva took his place on the ballot.
  4. Robin Williams – the world lost a great actor and entertainer in August 2014.
  5. Ice Bucket Challenge – regular people as well as celebrities raised awareness for ALS with the Ice Bucket Challenge. Did you know that George W. Bush's video was the most viewed Ice Bucket Challenge video in the US?
  6. Conflict in Gaza – the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians lasted for 7 weeks.
  7. Malaysia Airlines – Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared in March. Then in July, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed.
  8. Super Bowl – the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl XLVIII. They beat the Denver Broncos, 43-8.
  9. Michael Brown/Ferguson – a police officer shot an unarmed teenager in Ferguson.
  10. Sochi Winter Olympics – the 22nd Winter Olympic Games that took place in Russia this February.
